OUR PROGRAMS

At Carter Learning Adventure, we offer a range of specialized programs designed to support children with autism, learning disabilities, and developmental challenges. Each program is tailored to address specific needs and ensure children receive the right support to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Speech Therapy

Helping Children Find Their Voice

Speech therapy is essential for children who struggle with communication, articulation, language comprehension, or social interaction. Many children with autism or other learning disabilities have difficulty expressing their needs, understanding language, or engaging in conversations with others.

How It Works:

  • A licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) conducts an assessment to identify speech and language delays.

  • Therapy sessions focus on building vocabulary, improving articulation, enhancing comprehension skills, and strengthening social communication.

  • Techniques include play-based therapy, visual supports, sound drills, and interactive activities to make learning engaging and effective.

  • For children with nonverbal autism, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods such as picture exchange systems, communication devices, and sign language are introduced.

Benefits & Outcomes:

  • Improved ability to express thoughts, needs, and emotions

  • Enhanced comprehension and listening skills

  • Increased confidence in social interactions

  • Strengthened ability to form meaningful relationships

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Developing Essential Life Skills

Occupational therapy helps children develop the motor skills, coordination, and independence needed for daily activities. Many children with autism or developmental delays struggle with fine motor skills (writing, buttoning clothes), gross motor skills (balancing, jumping), and sensory processing (handling textures, sounds, or bright lights).

How It Works:

  • An occupational therapist evaluates the child’s motor coordination, sensory responses, and self-care abilities.

  • Therapy sessions include hands-on activities like puzzle-building, handwriting practice, dressing skills, and sensory integration exercises to help children become more independent.

  • Sensory-based techniques such as brushing therapy, weighted vests, and deep-pressure activities are used for children with sensory sensitivities.

Benefits & Outcomes:

  • Improved hand-eye coordination and motor control

  • Greater independence in self-care tasks (eating, dressing, grooming)

  • Increased ability to focus and participate in school activities

  • Enhanced ability to regulate sensory input, reducing meltdowns and anxiety

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy

Encouraging Positive Behavior and Skill Development

ABA therapy is a science-based approach to understanding and changing behavior. It is one of the most effective therapies for children with autism and is used to teach communication, social skills, self-regulation, and independence.

How It Works:

  • A Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) assesses the child’s behaviors, triggers, and skill gaps.

  • A customized behavior plan is created to reinforce positive behaviors and reduce challenging ones.

  • Therapists use positive reinforcement strategies, structured learning sessions, and real-life practice to help children develop new skills.

  • Parents and caregivers receive training on how to apply ABA techniques at home for consistency.

Benefits & Outcomes:

  • Reduction in repetitive, aggressive, or disruptive behaviors

  • Improved communication and problem-solving skills

  • Increased social engagement with peers and family

  • Enhanced ability to complete daily tasks independently

Physical Therapy (PT)

Building Strength, Coordination, and Mobility

Physical therapy is designed for children with motor delays, muscle weakness, poor coordination, or difficulty with balance and movement. Many children with autism or developmental disorders struggle with physical skills that impact walking, running, climbing stairs, or participating in sports and play activities.

How It Works:

  • A physical therapist (PT) assesses muscle strength, flexibility, posture, and coordination.

  • Sessions include fun, engaging exercises that encourage movement while improving balance, endurance, and strength.

  • Therapy may involve obstacle courses, stretching exercises, balance beams, and mobility training to enhance physical abilities.

Benefits & Outcomes:

  • Increased core strength, coordination, and endurance

  • Improved posture and balance

  • Greater independence in movement and participation in physical activities

  • Reduced risk of falls, injuries, and joint pain

Academic Support & Enrichment

Bridging the Gap for Students with Learning Challenges

Many children with autism or learning disabilities struggle in traditional classroom settings due to difficulties with reading, writing, math, focus, and comprehension.

Our academic support program helps children build confidence in their learning abilities through personalized instruction and adaptive teaching techniques.

How It Works:

  • A team of special educators and tutors assesses the child’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style.

  • Individualized education plans (IEPs) are developed to target specific academic skills.

  • Lessons incorporate visual learning, hands-on activities, assistive technology, and interactive games to enhance engagement.

  • Homework assistance, test prep, and study skills training are included to ensure students thrive in school environments.

Benefits & Outcomes:

  • Improved reading comprehension, writing, and math skills

  • Strengthened focus, memory, and problem-solving abilities

  • Enhanced confidence and motivation in learning

  • Greater success in classroom participation and standardized testing

Social Skills Training

Building Friendships and Emotional Intelligence

Many children with autism find it challenging to engage in social interactions, make friends, or understand emotions.

Our social skills training program teaches children how to communicate, read social cues, take turns, and build relationships.

How It Works:

  • Group sessions simulate real-life social situations through role-playing, interactive activities, and storytelling.

  • Children practice skills such as introducing themselves, sharing, maintaining conversations, and handling conflicts.

  • Emotional regulation techniques, including deep breathing exercises, self-soothing strategies, and coping mechanisms, are taught.

Benefits & Outcomes:

  • Increased confidence in social situations

  • Improved understanding of emotions and body language

  • Enhanced ability to make and maintain friendships

  • Greater emotional self-regulation and conflict resolution skills

Parent & Caregiver Training

Empowering Families to Support Their Child’s Growth

Parents and caregivers play a crucial role in a child’s development.

Our training program teaches families how to reinforce therapy techniques at home, manage behaviors, and advocate for their child’s needs.

How It Works:

  • Workshops and one-on-one training sessions cover communication strategies, behavior management, and sensory regulation.

  • Families learn how to create structured routines that support their child’s progress.

  • Guidance is provided on navigating school IEPs, insurance coverage, and therapy resources.

Benefits & Outcomes:

  • Parents gain confidence in supporting their child’s development.

  • Families experience less stress and improved daily interactions.

  • Children make faster progress due to consistent reinforcement at home.
